New Mexico Canine Rescue and Safeguard, Inc. was the county shelter for two years until June 30, 2006. NMCRS continued down the path of a no kill policy throughout this two year contract. We achieved this through various ways, including, but not limited to:
Partnering with Four Corners Animal League, working to transfer dogs to various entities in the state of Colorado.
Helping citizens keep their own dogs through education and counseling about spay/neuter, training issues, housing/fencing and veterinary care.
Utilizing foster situations until we had openings for incoming dogs, either through adoptions or transfers.
Our program for successful placement and transfer for dogs includes up to date shelter medicine and kennel management. We train every single dog over approximately five months of age to walk on a leash, sit, come when called, go into a crate, and go into their kennel. They are also given some agility training. We believe this gives our dogs a leg up and makes them extremely adoptable. The shelters in Colorado are very happy with our progressive work in this area, and we are proud to have been honored with the receipt of a report card from the City of Boulder in recognition of the 100% adoption rate of the dogs they have received from NMCRS.
Additional activities include:
Adoptathons.
Fundraising for providing spay/neuter for the county of Taos by tabling, newsletters, radiothons, and “remotes”.
Education with regards to spay/neuter/behavioral issues and fencing.
We are continuing to educate ourselves through entities in the state of New Mexico, including Companion Animal Alliance of Northern New Mexico, Animal Protection of New Mexico and partnering with Four Corners Animal League saving animals, supporting spay/neuter laws, and working towards a no-kill nation.
Please put this at the end of what we’re sending you on paper:
As of 2007, NMCRS has been voted in and accepted into the Companion Animal Alliance of Northern New Mexico (CAANNM).
NMCRS is a member of the Advocacy Committee headed by Animal Protection of New Mexico/Animal Protection Voters.
This is a subcommittee of CAANNM. We are currently working on forming the Sheltering Act, to insure standards of humane treatment in all shelters throughout the state of New Mexico.
SB10 Cockfighting Ban:
NMCRS has been working in conjunction with Animal Protection of New Mexico/Animal Protection Voters to ban cockfighting in the state of New Mexico, one of only two states left in our nation which allows this cruel practice. It is time this bloody sport is put behind us, and time for the people participating in cockfighting to be put behind bars. After much work and debate, SB10 has currently passed the Senate committees and is headed for the house. Stay tuned for the hopeful passage of this bill.
